Ageless Drivers

Should elders be required to retake the exam for driver’s license at a certain age? I think so. I have witnessed so many older individuals driving on the wrong side of the road. It scares me to think these people are not regulated. I don’t feel like they should take away their driving privileges but I do think they should be able to pass the actual driving portion of the exam.

As me again when I am 70, but right now I agree with you. Old people should be tested for their driving skills when they reach a certain age. I think mostly backing up. I have had too many close calls in parking lots with older individuals that aren't looking behind them.

I TOTALLY agree with you 100%!!!!! I realize the elderly need to get out and run their errands and see their friends, but sometimes they are the biggest hazard on the roads. Both sets of my grandparents drive extra slow and don't always see everything. Their reflexes are very slow which can be dangerous if they were to be in a wreck. I know they still love to get out and do things, but they really need to drive more safely! I don't think old people should lose their licenses, but they should MOST DEFINITELY be tested after a certain age. It would hopefully keep them safer as well as everybody else!

You know if you look at the statistic in retirement states such as Florida and now the popular Nevada most accidents are caused by an elder. Yes their reflexes are just slower and delayed. But I must agree I don’t think they should lose their license just they should just be reviewed. As I am sitting here typing I am thinking, maybe all of us should have our driving skills tested every once in a while. But there are two sides to every coin. I would hate to fail the driver’s exam at forty after I have been driving for almost 30 years.

Speaking as someone rapidly reaching the title of "elderly" (54 and counting), I agree that as we get older we need to be re-evaluated as to our driving skills. As we age response time diminishes and visual acuity gets impaired.

At the same time, I feel that persons ticketed for moving violations, regardless of age, should have to take a driver's test to prove their ability to drive safely.
